Before & After

Overjet

Overjet

Before

This patient had crowding with her upper teeth sticking out a fair distance which is known as an increased 'Overjet' The combination of this led to a bite that was far from ideal. The risk of having a significantly increased 'Overjet' is that should the person ever accidentally fall or receive a hit on the face during contact sports then the damage caused to the front teeth would be significantly more catastrophic than if the teeth were in their ideal positions.

After

This treatment was carried out with Ceramic braces by Ciara - our specialist orthodontist - who very skillfully managed to correct the bite and crowding simultaneously giving this young lady a smile and ability to chew that she deserves.

Reverse Bite

Reverse Bite

Before

This patient had significant crowding and a reverse bite also known as a "reverse Overjet" This is where the upper teeth bite behind the lowers creating a less than ideal smile as the upper teeth are hidden from view.

After

Ciara used Ceramic braces for this case to make the neccesary corrections to the bite and crowding as well as create the ideal overlap of the upper front teeth over the lowers. This was a very difficult case but one that was managed with braces alone and without surgery much to the patients delight. He can now eat, chew and smile with a lot morefull confidence.

Ceramic Braces
The facts

The facts about Ceramic Braces

What Are Ceramic Braces?

Ceramic braces work similarly to metal braces, using a system of brackets, archwires, and elastic bands to gradually shift teeth into their ideal position. The key difference lies in the material: ceramic braces feature brackets made from translucent or tooth-coloured ceramic, making them far less visible. They are bonded to the front of each tooth and connected with a wire that gently applies pressure over time.

Ceramic braces are suitable for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues, including:

  • Crooked or crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, and crossbite
  • Jaw alignment problems

Benefits of Ceramic Braces

Discreet Aesthetics
The biggest advantage of ceramic braces is their subtle appearance. The brackets blend with your teeth, making them far less noticeable than traditional metal braces—ideal for professionals and image-conscious individuals.

Effective Treatment
Ceramic braces offer the same level of precision and control as metal braces, making them suitable for both mild and complex orthodontic cases.

Comfortable Materials
Ceramic brackets are smooth and less likely to irritate the inside of your mouth compared to metal ones.

Stain-Resistant Options
Modern ceramic braces are more stain-resistant than earlier versions, especially when paired with white-coated wires and clear elastics.

Confidence Boost
Because they’re less visible, ceramic braces can improve self-esteem during treatment by helping you feel more comfortable in social and professional situations.

The Process for Ceramic Braces

Initial Consultation
Your orthodontist will assess your smile, bite, and alignment to determine if ceramic braces are the best option for you. X-rays and digital scans may be taken for precise treatment planning.

Brace Fitting
During the fitting appointment, ceramic brackets are carefully bonded to your teeth and connected with a thin archwire. Clear or white elastics may be used to keep everything secure.

Regular Adjustments
You’ll visit your orthodontist every 6–8 weeks for adjustments. These appointments allow for gradual, controlled movement of your teeth and ensure everything is progressing as planned.

Oral Hygiene and Care
You’ll need to brush and floss thoroughly every day to prevent staining and maintain healthy gums. Your orthodontist may also recommend avoiding certain foods to protect the brackets and wires.

Treatment Duration
Treatment with ceramic braces typically lasts between 12 and 30 months, depending on the complexity of your case and how well you follow care instructions.

Retention Phase
Once your braces are removed, you’ll wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new, straightened position.

Q
Whats the earliest age my child can get braces?

The most common age to get braces is usually anytime after the age of 12-13 years as that is the time when all the milk teeth would have departed and only adult teeth remain. However there are many instances when braces would need to be fitted in children under the age of 12 for specific orthodontic issues that can be corrected early whilst the child is growing. It is particularly important therefore to ensure that your child is seen for regular check up by your dentist so that early Orthodontic problems can be identified and corrected at the earliest possible stage.

Q
Im an adult, am i too old for braces?

There is no upper age limit for braces. As long as you have good oral hygiene and a mouth free from dental disease then you are eligible for braces to straighten your teeth at any age. So whether you are in your 20s or 90s -as long as you fulfil the above criteria you are welcome to benefit from orthodontic treatment with braces.

Q
Are ceramic braces faster than metal braces?

Both types of braces will achieve the same end results in a similar time frame in most cases. In certain cases metal braces may achieve a slightly faster result. The benefits of ceramic braces over traditional metal ones include:

  • They are more discrete
  • More socially acceptable amongst adults
  • They are easier to remove (Only if you use the best quality ones)
Q
Are any foods off limits with Ceramic braces?

When you wear ceramic braces in addition to the usual foods you need to avoid with conventional braces you also need to avoid stain-causing foods, such as tomatoes, chocolate, tea, coffee, red wine and curries.

Q
What are the disadvantages of Ceramic braces?

There are a handful of instances where metal braces are more suitable that Ceramic braces in being able to straighten your teeth.

Where opposing teeth touch the ceramic brace they can wear away a bit quicker

Ceramic braces are very strong but not as strong as metal and sometime the odd bracket can break and need to be repaired.

The elastic around the ceramic brace may pick up stains over time. The brace itself should not stain as long as the best quality ceramic braces are being used.

Q
Will Ceramic braces pick up stains easily?

The elastic rings that hold the wires onto the brace can stain over time with curries, red wine, tea and coffee- however these rings would be changed every 4-6 weeks with fresh ones so by the time they start to get stained they would be ready to be replaced.

The actual ceramic brace itself should not change as long as the very best quality of braces are used. At Zental we only the highest quality ceramic braces made by 3M and these do not stain. Cheaper composite brackets that may be in use elsewhere will stain and break more easily
