Dental Bridge
The facts

The facts about Dental Bridge

Missing teeth can affect your confidence, speech, and ability to eat comfortably. At Zental, we offer expertly crafted dental bridges, a fixed, natural-looking solution that restores both function and aesthetics. Whether you have lost a tooth due to injury, illness, or decay, our bespoke bridges are designed to blend beautifully with your smile.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a custom-made prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth. It literally “bridges” the gap created by missing teeth and neighboring teeth or implants, using them as anchors to support artificial teeth (called pontics), which are also referred to as false teeth. These pontics are crafted to match your natural teeth in shape, colour, and size, ensuring a seamless and comfortable restoration.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are several types of dental bridges available:

Traditional Bridges

Also known as a traditional dental bridge or traditional bridge, this is a permanent bridge that is fixed in place. It is supported by dental crowns placed on two teeth adjacent to the gap created by missing teeth. Traditional bridges often use porcelain fused to metal crowns for added strength and durability.

Cantilever Bridges

Cantilever dental bridges are used when there is only one adjacent tooth available to support the restoration. Unlike traditional bridges, they rely on a single anchor tooth, making them ideal for areas with limited support. They offer a conservative solution but require careful planning to ensure long-term stability.

Maryland Bridges

Also called a Maryland dental bridge, this is a resin-bonded bridge that uses a lightweight metal or porcelain framework attached to the backs of adjacent natural teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges are a modern solution for replacing multiple missing teeth. Instead of relying on natural teeth, they are anchored to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone. This provides superior stability, preserves bone structure, and eliminates the need to alter adjacent teeth. They offer long-term durability and a natural-looking smile.

Dental Bridge Benefits

Choosing a dental bridge offers a wide range of advantages:

  • Restores Chewing Function: Eat and speak with ease again.
  • Improves Aesthetics: Bridges are designed to look and feel like your natural teeth. After an initial adjustment period, dental bridges should feel similar to real teeth.
  • Prevents Teeth Shifting: Filling the gap helps maintain proper alignment and prevents misalignment of other teeth.
  • Supports Facial Structure: Prevents sagging caused by missing teeth.
  • Boosts Confidence: A complete smile enhances self-esteem and social comfort.
  • Fixed & Durable: Unlike removable dentures, bridges are securely bonded and long-lasting.

At Zental, our dental bridges are crafted in our modern dental lab using premium materials and advanced techniques, ensuring durability and a flawless finish.

Dental Bridge Process

Your journey to a restored smile begins with a personalised consultation:

Initial Assessment

Our expert dentists will evaluate your oral health and discuss your goals. Digital scans or impressions are taken to plan your treatment. Depending on your needs, existing teeth or a natural tooth may be used as anchors for the bridge, or a dental implant may be placed if needed.

Tooth Preparation

If using adjacent teeth as anchors, they may be gently reshaped to support the dental bridge. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure the procedure is pain-free. For implant-supported bridges, implants are placed first, which may require oral surgery performed by an oral surgeon.

Custom Bridge Fabrication

Your bridge is crafted in our top-tier lab using high-quality porcelain, zirconia, or metal alloys. We ensure it matches your natural teeth perfectly. While your final bridge is being custom-made, a temporary bridge may be placed to maintain function and aesthetics.

Fitting & Adjustment

Once ready, your bridge is securely bonded in place. We have dental bridges fitted with careful attention to comfort, bite alignment, and aesthetics before finalising.

Aftercare & Maintenance

With proper hygiene and regular check-ups, your bridge can last 10–15 years or more. We’ll guide you on how to care for it like your natural teeth, including cleaning around the gum line to prevent decay and ensure longevity. Composite resin can sometimes be used to repair minor damage to a bridge.

The final bridge is custom-made for a seamless fit and long-term function as a permanent bridge.

Q
What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges are fixed replacement for your missing teeth that use existing teeth as support to help hold them in place.

Q
What are the advantages of dental bridges?

They are fixed replacements for your missing teeth so you do not need to worry about removing them. They function like your missing teeth so help you eat and chew better. They are long lasting and resilient fixed replacements for your missing teeth.

Q
What are the disadvantages of bridges?

They rely on the adjacent teeth to act as supporting structures and so are solely reliant on the health of these teeth to able to help support them.

Q
What are the different types of dental bridge?

There are 2 types of dental bridge: Either Conventional or Adhesive.

Q
What is a 'Conventional Bridge'?

Conventional bridges are where a crown/onlay is required to be placed on either one or both teeth adjacent to a gap in order to restore the missing gap.

The average lifespan of a conventional bridge is 7-15 years but depends on the health of the adjacent teeth.

Q
What is an Adhesive Bridge (maryland bridge)?

Adhesive bridges also known as “Sticky bridges”, “Resinbonded bridges” or “Maryland bridges” are ones that do not require the adjacent teeth to be crowned as they are stuck onto them by way of a metal (or porcelain) wing that attaches to the adjacent tooth/teeth.

They often need little to no preparation to the adjacent teeth so are more biologically friendly but have a greater tendency to debondif excessive forces are applied to it. The average lifespan of Adhesive bridges are 5-10 years and again depends on the health of the adjacent teeth.

Q
Am I suitable for a dental bridge? And if so which type?

This can be advised once we have assessed your teeth. We would advise you book in for an examination where we can take the necessary x-rays and advise you on the suitability for this procedure and whether any alternatives would fair better.
